Egschiglen

Museu do Oriente, Lisboa Doca de Alcantara Norte, Av. Brasília, Lisbon, Lisbon Metropolitan Area, Portugal

The Egschiglen group was founded in 1991 by master’s students from the Ulán Bator Conservatory. The three elements that make up it today are founding members and the heart of the group that, since its inception, is dedicated to the contemporary interpretation of traditional Mongolian music. The music of a country is inspired by its landscape and the way of life of its people. Mongolia, in the heart of Asia, is a vast territory, approximately twelve times larger than Portugal. It is a country with endless pastures to the south, to the arid beauty of the Gobi desert. In the snowy mountains of Altai and Changai, crystal clear rivers traverse forests and plains. Egschiglen’s music impresses by its variety and expressiveness. They perform traditional songs and works by contemporary Mongolian composers with their harmonious arrangements, using traditional instruments from their country and vocal techniques from Central Asia. You can almost hear the sound of the husks of the strong Mongolian horses: Genghis Khan founded the greatest empire in the world thanks to them. And, again, the music transports us to the pure silence of the Gobi desert, where only the wind sings in the dunes. A music of contrasts of great evocative capacity. The style of khoomii singing, which consists in producing at the same time a very sharp and very guttural sound, seems superhuman. However, the music sounds familiar, expressing timeless human feelings: love, sadness and gratitude.

Manuel de Oliveira

Teatro-Cine, Torres Vedras Av. Ten. Valadim 19, Torres Vedras, Central Portugal, Portugal

For "Entre-Lugar", Manuel de Oliveira started from his recognized Iberian identity, adding colors and flavors from other places, crossing ethnic with urban, African music with fado, flamenco with tango, in a vast multicultural symbiosis. The viola Braguesa plays a determining role in this multiculturality, already previously explored in the album "Iberia" but, here and now, with a stronger and decisive presence. Braguesa, thanks to its sonority, somewhere between the dolence of the Portuguese Guitar and the exoticism of the Arabic Mandola, gives "EntreLugar" its true meaning, of restless identity, without prejudice and at the same time full of authenticity among the places of Portuguese identity. In concert, Manuel de Oliveira performs in trio with João Frade and Sandra Martins to play "Entre - Lugar" and revisit some of the themes of "Ibéria" and "Amarte".
